So, you’re a full-time artist in Oakland, CA. How’s life?
It’s awesome. It’s great. I don’t make much money, but if I wanted to make money I wouldn’t be an artist. My primary motive’s to make myself happy.
How
much do you like the enterprising side of being an artist, though?
I don’t really do it so much, promoting. Usually people come up with the promotion in galleries. I prefer people coming to me to the other way round. But every once in a while I have to make the first approach. You see, I don’t like creating works to please audiences, so that’s why I prefer my audience to come to me instead.
Do your future plans all lie in the Bay Area?
Actually, I’m going to go back to Tokyo on the 27th or 28th for good. I don’t really want to go back, though, because I don’t know what’s going on in Tokyo. I’ve never lived there as a painter and I just imagine it to be bad. Maybe it won’t be that bad. Well, I’ll fly over there and see how it is. And if I don’t like it, I’ll try to come back to the States after a few months... You know what? I think I will head back to California after all.
