The Critical Dimensions of a Gez Fry Illustration - 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

"Drifting" by Gez Fry And how did you create the sky in Drifting?

I painted the sky with the brush and layer tools in Photoshop and referenced photos I've taken of the sky and some photos of space I have in books. Though you wouldn't see a sky with such a sudden switch from evening clouds to stars in reality, it works in an illustration. I hope!

A lot of the pieces on your website are representative of your commercial work. Do you have time for personal projects?

I do have a couple of things that I work on whenever I have some free time. Roses & Skulls is the one personal project I'm determined to see through to completion. It's a storybook with one illustration per page, in grey scale with colour highlights. I've put a couple of work in progress shots up in the sketches section of my website.

It sounds intriguing!

Thanks! I'm not completely decided yet on where it's going, but provisionally, it'll have one text legend to accompany each image, at one image a page. I haven't decided if I’m going to use verse or prose yet. The colour highlight idea is that each character will have their own signature colour on parts of their clothing or hair and so on. Everything else will be in a de-saturated palette.

Your cityscapes and backgrounds in the Roses & Skulls sketches are beautiful and generously detailed. Have you been or would you ever want to be a background/environment artist for a video game or film?

Honestly, for me it's all about the characters. I love drawing detailed worlds and environments because that's where the characters live. There's nothing more fun than thinking of a character and then thinking of the world they inhabit. So for that reason, I'm more interested in images of people in landscapes as opposed to just landscapes.

Tell us more about how your parents, especially your mother, influenced your career. Describe your mother’s art and its impact on your work.

The main influence my parents have had on my art is by being great parents. They've always supported what I want to do, not in a 'tolerating' kind of way, but with real enthusiasm. That has a huge impact on me, knowing that they're proud. My mother's art is very individual and interesting -- a blend of abstract and representational. It's kind of like what music might look like on paper, and it inspires me. You can check it out on www.mayko.net!
