An
EP? How's that working out?
The EP is fun. I'm all over the place with it (just like my art) because I'm more attached to getting the song to feel good than to having a consistent sound. It's a sort of rock opera about superheroes. There's also an EP of just acoustic stuff coming soon. Not enough hours in the day.
The idea of the “unstoppable good” is important to you, isn't it?
I don't believe in “unstoppable good,” but I'm definitely an optimist. We all have privileged lives when you step back and look at the big picture. It would be pretty lame to waste them on pessimism.
What are your feelings on your contributions to Flight?
It's a great book and a great project. Kazu [Kibuishi,
editor of Flight] is an inspiration to everyone who's around
him -- he just really
believes
in the power of comics and storytelling and it gets the rest of us fired
up. I think comics have finally turned away from that muscle-magazine
shit and are becoming a legitimate literary form covering all kinds of
subject matter.
You don't have that high of an opinion of the comics of the old days?
Some of the old comics (pre-1970's) are amazing. Recent American superhero comics don't really do it for me. Some of the alternative comics around now are pretty cool.
Your comic in Flight is a moving piece of work. What inspired it?
It's basically a thank you letter to my parents for being such great shepherds of my childhood. Symbolic imagery and whatnot. I'm not a very good comic artist but I think if your story has a good heart, people will put up with a lack of technique.
If
you had any mantra on life, what would it be?
Turn off the fucking TV.
Haha, no, seriously I have no idea -- we're all figuring it out as we go.
