You’re a comic artist and have also worked as a commercial illustrator
before. What comparisons can you make? Any accomplishments?
The
commercial illustration industry here is shit. I go from shovelling shit
to becoming a comic artist -- do you think I have a sense of accomplishment?
Ha! Go on.
I just hated illustrating trivial, meaningless things and being subjected to my clients’ whims. It was almost abusive, this lack of creativity.
Well, do you have a work you’re most satisfied with so far?
… No… I’m still very inexperienced! …Very weak… and I’m not being modest.
So what’s your holy grail?
In terms of painting technique, to reach a world-class standard; in terms of emotional expression, to be able to reflect the spirit of my generation in a profound way. I want to travel more and understand this world. And I shouldn’t always drift in the gutters of society -- it’s not three-dimensional to see things from there. Sometimes my writing becomes too extreme.
My most ideal project would be a completely self-created comic work with a realistic subject matter, something that China’s youth could read and be touched by, to the point of wanting to relive the experience over and again. I guess that's all.
